  • Tighter GD&T: Quote assumes ±0.05 mm tolerances, but your print specifies ±0.01 mm on critical features. Expect wire EDM and additional polishing charges.
  • Surface finish beyond standard: SPI-A1/A2 mirror polish, or specific Ra values, are not the same as standard #600 grit. Budget $300–$1,500 per cavity for premium finish.
  • Insert replacements: Some suppliers quote a “single-cavity” mold using replaceable inserts, then charge for each insert set at PO time.

  • No material or hardness specification in the quote. If they won’t commit to SKD11, DC53, or tungsten carbide, you have no recourse when the mold wears prematurely.
  • Vague delivery terms: “45–90 days” with no milestone schedule signals a shop that has over-promised and under-resourced.
  • No IP / ownership clause offered proactively. Reputable suppliers put mold ownership transfer in writing by default. If they don’t, ask why.
  • Payment terms requiring 100% upfront. Industry standard is 30/30/30/10 or similar. A 100% upfront demand signals cash flow problems or low confidence in delivery.
  • No factory audit or sample report available. If they can’t show you a similar part they’ve built, your mold is their learning project.

6. How to Get a True Apples-to-Apples Quote

The fastest way to normalize mold quotes is to send a detailed RFQ package that includes:

  1. 3D model (STEP or IGES) + 2D drawing with GD&T
  2. Material specification (grade, hardness requirement, coating)
